The Open Gender Journal is an open access journal. It publishes academic articles from gender studies, women's studies and related fields such as queer studies, trans* inter* studies, disability studies, racism studies, critical whiteness and postcolonial studies, diversity studies and intersectionality.

The Open Gender Journal is committed to free, unrestricted access to gender research: All articles are accessible to readers worldwide free of charge. There are also no publication costs for authors. Free licenses (Creative Commons BY 4.0) guarantee that the content can be distributed and reused.

All research articles that appear in the journal make an independent academic contribution to gender studies and undergo an anonymous review process. In addition to research articles, reviews and contributions on current debates within gender studies can also be submitted. Submissions for the annual issue are possible at any time and are published on an ongoing basis. In addition to the annual issue, the Open Gender Journal also publishes Special Issues to reflect current focal points of trans- and interdisciplinary gender research.

The open access journal is published by the Margherita von Brentano Center together with the Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien, Gender Studies in Köln (GeStiK) at the University of Cologne and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Gender Research Office at the University of Vienna and has been published by the open access publisher Berlin Universities Publishing since 2024.

The Open Gender Journal is currently being funded as part of the DFG project “Open Gender Journal - Consolidation”. It sends out a newsletter to interested parties twice a year, in which the editorial team provides information on current publications and calls for papers and shares insights into the journal's work and event information.
