Fachinformationsdienst Geschlechterforschung / Gender Studies bewilligt
News from Jul 11, 2025
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved the establishment of a specialized information service (FID) for gender research / gender studies. This is the first centrally coordinated infrastructure for the provision of scientific information for inter- and transdisciplinary gender studies in Germany.
The FID supports researchers with target group-specific services - in gender studies as well as in other disciplines in which gender-related or intersectional perspectives are pursued. It bundles existing research infrastructures, improves the supply of literature and creates target group-specific services in the area of research data management and open access. The focus is on sustainable support and making gender-related research visible - including via a specialist portal that will go online next year.
The first services will be available from 2026. From then on, workshops will also be held in the FID's various fields of action. They will address the needs of the specialist community and invite them to help shape the services.
The project is supported by a consortium consisting of
- the Margherita von Brentano Center of the Freie Universität Berlin,
- the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies of the Humboldt Universität Berlin
- the University Library of Humboldt-Universität Berlin
- GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences,
- and the Research Data Centre (RDC) Qualiservice.
Another cooperation partner is the Digitales Deutsches Frauenarchiv (DDF) with its feminist database and search engine META, which makes central holdings on women's and gender history digitally available and is being expanded by the FID. Supported by the umbrella organization of German-speaking lesbian/women's archives, libraries and documentation centres (i.d.a.), the DDF also contributes its many years of expertise in the indexing and dissemination of feminist knowledge to the specialist information service.
We would like to thank everyone who supported the application during the development phase and look forward to further cooperation. Please feel free to contact us with any ideas, for example if you are planning projects or events where collaboration with the FID could be useful.
