Convened by Dr. habil. Tomasz Kitlinski (Academy in Exile, Freie Universität Berlin)

The Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin is organizing for this summer term 2022, the fourth edition of the Transnational Feminist Dialogues. The current series focusses on the realities of (violent) conflicts, militarization and struggles for social justice, equality and peace that take place in different countries and regions from a gender perspective.

About the session:

Warum Krieg? Why War? This is a title of exchange between Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein still topical today, but lacking a gender and queer aspect. That is why Tomasz Kitlinski convenes – to discuss the current Putin’s war on Ukraine – outstanding specialists in feminist and LGBTQ* Studies from Ukraine and its neighbor, which has accepted the most refugees, Poland.

The war constitutes the epitome of violent patriarchy, machismo, and homophobia. This is a clash of anti-woman, anti-queer, anti-foreigner totalitarianism versus an emerging democracy.

Warum Krieg? Why War? Has Putin desired more will to power over the “Other”? Has he wanted to eliminate the Kristevan “Strangers”? How the rise in right-wing politics, fundamentalist religion, and radical nationalism in Russia is constructed and results in gendered/intersectional violence? How are justice, human rights, violence, conflicts and social change framed and approached by different local, global and transnational actors from a gender/intersectional perspective? Which complexities and particularities present specific gender based conflicts within different contexts? Which actors are engage in resisting these conflicts and what strategies are used? How to approach peace and social justice?

These are some of the most important questions that Tomasz Kitlinski will be discussing with our guests.
