In recent weeks, there have been several anti-queer, far-right attacks at the Institute for Theater Studies at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin): During orientation week, the Pride flag was torn down in front of the institute. The following week, swastikas and slogans glorifying Nazism were found in a gender-neutral restroom at the institute.

In addition, on October 22, an anti-feminist demonstration by the ultra-conservative, right-wing Catholic, and fundamentalist group “Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Schutz von Tradition, Familie und Privateigentum e. V. (TFP)” took place in front of the main entrance to the FU, during which a group of men demonstrated against bodily autonomy under the banner “Public Rosary Against Abortion.”

The MvBZ condemns these far-right attacks on the queer university community as well as on bodily autonomy. We stand in solidarity with the queer students and colleagues at the FU, as well as with members of the university who felt threatened by the anti-feminist demonstration. We explicitly advocate for a queer and feminist university community and consider it central to a society free of discrimination, based on equality, diversity, and democracy.

We urge everyone not to let such attacks go unanswered. To that end, we would like to draw attention to Berlin’s discrimination reporting centers, where hate symbols at the FU and/or incidents of discrimination can be reported, which helps bring violence to light and track it statistically.

We would also like to draw attention to the “Science Against Fascism” action week, which will take place nationwide from November 16–20 and provides a framework for discussing anti-queer, anti-feminist, and/or far-right violence, as well as the role of academia and universities. Students and faculty members have the opportunity to register events for the action week.
