#4GenderStudies Special Issue*

Organized by the Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies in collaboration with Dr. Paniz Musawi Natanzi

In 2015, leading universities in the capital, Kabul University and the American University of Afghanistan, introduced programs in the field of Women and Gender Studies and other private universities increasingly pursued the question of how to approach, analyse and write about gender across disciplines in the context of Afghanistan. These programs predominantly reached urban students and employed Afghan nationals with regional and international migrational and educational journeys and foreign teaching staff in Kabul.

In light of the fall of Kabul mid-August 2021 and the formal end of the US-led "War on Terror" and liberal reconstruction, which put "gender mainstreaming" on the centre-stage of development, we discussed with transnationally entangled Afghan women scholars and activists what the handover of power to the Taliban means for academics and students in the field of Women and Gender Studies in Afghanistan. In conversation with our panelists working at the disciplinary junction of Afghanistan Studies and Women and Gender Studies, we spoke about the trajectory of scholars and students in Women and Gender Studies in Kabul and the provinces and reflected on meaningful and sensible pathways of practicing transnational feminist solidarity with Afghan peers and colleagues in the field.

*The idea of the #4GenderStudies Action/Science Day started in 2017 with the intention to show Gender Studies in all their diversity and to portray their scientific contribution to different fields. Since then, it is celebrated online and offline every December 18 in the German-speaking context. In Berlin, we focused on the topic "Feminist Solidarities".
