Open Gender Journal
The Open Gender Journal is an open-access journal. It publishes scholarly contributions from intersectional gender studies and related fields.
All research articles published in the journal make an independent scholarly contribution to gender studies and undergo anonymous peer review. Authors can also submit reviews and contributions to current debates within gender studies alongside research articles. Submissions for the annual edition are accepted at any time and are published on a roling basis. Beyond the annual issue, the Open Gender Journal also publishes special issues that reflect current focal points in trans- and interdisciplinary gender studies.
Scholar-Led Diamond Open Access
The Open Gender Journal is committed to free, unrestricted access to gender studies: all contributions are freely accessible to readers worldwide. Under the so-called diamond open access model, authors also incur no publication costs. Open licenses (Creative Commons BY 4.0) ensure that the content can be distributed and reused.
The open-access journal is jointly published by the Margherita von Brentano Center, the Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien, Gender Studies in Cologne (GeStiK) at the University of Cologne, the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and the Gender Research Office at the University of Vienna. It has appeared since 2024 with the open-access publisher Berlin Universities Publishing. The editorial team is made up of scholars from different disciplines, status groups, and institutions, reflecting the inter-/transdisciplinarity of gender studies as well as the diversity of the field.
Further Development of the Journal
The journal is continuously developed further through various third-party funded projects based at the MvBZ. These projects serve to adapt the journal to current standards of open-access publishing, to explore new formats and workflows, and to actively help shape current challenges such as artificial intelligence and the internationalization of publishing, in cooperation with other journals and the open-access community.
- BMBF project Open Gender Platform (2018–2020)
- DFG project Open Gender Journal – Expansion Support (in partnership with GeStiK, University of Cologne, 2022–2024)
- DFG project "Open Gender Journal – Consolidation" (2026–2028)
Twice a year, the journal sends a newsletter to interested readers. In it, the editorial team reports on recent publications and calls for papers, and shares event announcements as well as insights into the journal's work.
