GenderOpen – A Repository for Gender Studies
The GenderOpen repository is an open-access infrastructure that makes publications and other knowledge resources from gender studies permanently and freely accessible while ensuring their long-term preservation. GenderOpen now provides access to more than 3,700 publications, most of which can also be freely reused.
The repository allows to find, view with just a few clicks, and work with publications in the field of gender studies. For authors, it offers the opportunity to make their research findings from the field of gender studies publicly accessible, bringing them more quickly and effectively into scholarly focus.
GenderOpen is a joint project of the MvBZ and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The repository is hosted by the University Library of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Development of GenderOpen
The GenderOpen repository was launched as a joint project of Berlin's three university-based centers for gender studies. It was built as part of a DFG-funded project (running from 1 October 2016 to 31 October 2019) and went live on 4 December 2017. The DFG project was led by Dr. Anita Runge, Margherita von Brentano Center at Freie Universität Berlin, Dr. Karin Aleksander, Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Sabine Hark, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies on Women and Gender at Technische Universität Berlin.
From 2022 to 2025, the Berlin University Alliance funded the further development of the platform, with project leadership held by Dr. Heike Pantelmann, Managing Director of the Margherita von Brentano Center.
Further Development as Part of FID Gender
We are currently working to integrate GenderOpen into the offerings of the FID Gender , making it even more visible as a central open-access infrastructure for gender studies. This development is being funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the FID. In addition, GenderOpen's holdings are continuously expanded and developed further. To this end, we cooperate with numerous institutions in the field of gender studies, publishers and editors of academic journals and book series, as well as with authors who make their work available.
