The Open Gender Platform will go online on 26 September 2019. The platform offers new open access formats, tools for open publishing and information on technologies, business models and quality assurance.

The information offering is aimed at authors, editors and publishers from gender studies. It is aimed at supporting the gender studies community in its transformation to open scientific publishing and links it with the open access community.

The Open Gender Platform provides gender studies with a place for new, open publication formats: it enables the publication of open access collections, starting with the German Gender Studies Association’s conference proceedings, which are published in cooperation with the Open Gender Journal under the label "Open Gender Collections".

The freely usable database of reviewers is fully in line with the idea of networking: it serves journal editors to find suitable and qualified persons for the quality assurance of submitted articles. Another helpful tool for implementing open access is the Schlagwortindex GenderOpen, a keyword index for gender studies. It can be used by all projects that want to describe content with meaningful terms and make it searchable.

Open access aims to make scientific publications freely accessible and usable for all. By supporting open access, gender studies, which deals scientifically with intersectional power and exclusion mechanisms, contributes to the removal of barriers to access. The greater public visibility also enables a broad reception of its results. The Open Gender Platform shows which journals and projects promote open access and open science in gender studies.

The new open access offering was developed as part of the BMBF-funded Open Gender Platform project at Freie Universität's Margherita-von-Brentano-Zentrum. To this end, the project, led by Dr. Anita Runge, is cooperating with the German Gender Studies Association (Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien). After the funding period, the association will take over the sponsorship of the platform.
