German Idealism and Feminist Philosophy, 03.11.2023

Organized by: Finnland-Institut, Berlin, PD Dr. Susanne Lettow, Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies, Freie Universität Berlin, Prof. Dr. Tuija Pulkkinen, Department of Cultures, Director doctoral program Gender, Culture and Society (SKY), University of Helsinki.

Today, many concepts and ideas which were formulated within the philosophies of Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and other thinkers of German Idealism are deployed, discussed, and re-interpreted by feminist philosophers in myriad ways. Feminist philosophers also critically engage with ideas on gender relations as formulated by the thinkers of German Idealism, including notions of gender, sexuality, family, and marriage. In these philosophical encounters the intersections between constructions of gender relations, Eurocentrism, and modern discourse on race that shaped the thought of German Idealism have increasingly gained critical attention in recent years and as a result, the understanding of both German Idealism and feminist philosophy have significantly expanded. The editors, Tuija Pulkkinen and Susanne Lettow will present the Handbook of German Idealism and Feminist Philosophy (Palgrave Macmillan 2023) together with the authors, and discuss the question how to deal with the multiple legacies of German Idealism, and how intersections of German Idealism and feminist philosophy impact on today’s philosophical landscape. Confirmed speakers are: Herta Nagl-Docekal, Shannon Hoff, Dilek Huseyinzadegan, Jamila Mascat, Lina Papadaki, Jameliah Shorter-Bourhanou, Elena Tzelepis, Helen Zorgdrager.
